Technical Developments
The National Research Council (NRC) soundPATHS tool now includes total precast concrete scenarios
We are pleased to announce that the National Research Council (NRC) soundPATHS tool has now been updated to include total precast concrete scenarios. “The National Research Council's (NRC) soundPATHS web application is a prediction tool for the calculation of direct and flanking sound transmission between adjacent rooms. The software uses the calculation procedure outlined in the 2015 edition of the National Building Code of Canada.” CPCI is proud to have contributed to the development of this tool through sponsored research from the CPCI Technical Committee and staff involvement in the multi-sector special interest group.
CPCI Publishes the Self-Consolidating Concrete for Precast Applications: Best Practice Guide
The purpose of this new best practice document is to provide guidance to precasters, designers, specifiers, and owners/agencies on the important characteristics for the design, fabrication, and specification of self-consolidating concrete (SCC). SCC is defined as concrete that flows under its own weight or, with some agitation, spreads readily into place while remaining stable. Get your free copy!

CPCI Precast Concrete Guide to LEED v4.
April 2019 - Even if you are familiar with LEED, LEED v4 is vastly different than its predecessor. Take a moment to review this valuable guide. It will provide you with specific areas in which precast may be able to contribute directly or indirectly to obtaining LEED credits.
Tool for tracking GHGs in Canada's buildings has "built in" errors. The study Carbon accounting practices need improvements, may misdirect efforts to reduce emissions
April 2019 - One of the major key findings by International Institute for Sustainable Development is that LCA studies typically do not track the carbon emissions or sequestration of what is known as “biogenic carbon” from the extraction and end-of-life stages of wood building products. Collectively, these emissions can represent up to 70 per cent of a wood product’s total lifecycle emissions., challenging the prevailing assumption that wood construction materials are lower carbon than other construction materials, such as concrete and steel.
Education
Mel Marshall Making Waves in Education
For Mel Marshall, president of Mel C. Marshall Industrial Consultants Inc., education programming at the National Precast Concrete Association has always provided ample satisfaction. “It’s a selfish feeling,” Marshall said. “People say, ‘Great, we appreciate you doing this.’ I say, ‘I’m doing it because I love it. I absolutely love it.’” Mel Marshall has been educating and captivating students at NPCA events for nearly 20 years. Thankfully, the students love it too. Marshall is one of many industry experts who serve as the core team to design and shape the overall approach of NPCA’s education programming, which has gained interest, excitement and participation over the past two decades.
