Mitacs and the Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) are Proud to Announce a Memorandum of Understanding
Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario October 17, 2019 - Mitacs and the Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) are pleased to announce a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to leverage, expand, and formalize their existing and future partner collaborations. The MOU seeks to advance their common student network activities and incorporate relevant academic research for commercial R&D. Projects in this agreement are divided into three separate streams; Stream 1, National Graduate Student Scholarships; Stream 2, Precast Studio Program; and Stream 3, Collaboration in Research & Development Activities. The result of these efforts will have a direct impact on new career opportunities and will help build a future-ready workforce. Graduates have access to high-value highly skilled jobs through internships and commercial research that will significantly improve their domestic employment potential and contributes to a positive environment that encourages graduates to stay in Canada.

Technical Developments
Now Available - FREE Precast Concrete Wall Thermal Performance Calculator
April 2019 - Energy and thermal performance requirements are growing and playing an increasingly significant role in building codes throughout North America. CPCI’s new Web-enabled software provides designers, builders, and owners with a program to ensure compliance options for modern building energy codes, and suitable methods for quickly estimating, at an early design stage, the thermal performance of precast concrete enclosure wall systems
Newly Updated CPCI Curing Technical Bulletin
CPCI recently published an update to the CPCI Curing Technical Bulletin. The CPCI technical committee originally approved the first version of this publication in 2013, and it included the state of the art research conducted by the National Research Council of Canada on behalf of CPCI . This latest version has now been expanded to include the new surface durability research by Professor Hooton, University of Toronto, that was approved for publication earlier this year. Also, where necessary we have also cited the changes to CSA A23.1/2 in the most recent 2014 edition, particularly the changes to RCP and compressive strength requirements from 56 and 28 days to 'within 91 days and 56 days. Finally, we have had the publication professionally laid out to make it consistent with our other CPCI technical publications.

CPCI Precast Concrete Guide to LEED v4.
April 2019 - Even if you are familiar with LEED, LEED v4 is vastly different than its predecessor. Take a moment to review this valuable guide. It will provide you with specific areas in which precast may be able to contribute directly or indirectly to obtaining LEED credits.
Tool for tracking GHGs in Canada's buildings has "built in" errors. The study Carbon accounting practices need improvements, may misdirect efforts to reduce emissions
April 2019 - One of the major key findings by International Institute for Sustainable Development is that LCA studies typically do not track the carbon emissions or sequestration of what is known as “biogenic carbon” from the extraction and end-of-life stages of wood building products. Collectively, these emissions can represent up to 70 per cent of a wood product’s total lifecycle emissions., challenging the prevailing assumption that wood construction materials are lower carbon than other construction materials, such as concrete and steel.

Mel Marshall Making Waves in Education
For Mel Marshall, president of Mel C. Marshall Industrial Consultants Inc., education programming at the National Precast Concrete Association has always provided ample satisfaction. “It’s a selfish feeling,” Marshall said. “People say, ‘Great, we appreciate you doing this.’ I say, ‘I’m doing it because I love it. I absolutely love it.’” Mel Marshall has been educating and captivating students at NPCA events for nearly 20 years. Thankfully, the students love it too. Marshall is one of many industry experts who serve as the core team to design and shape the overall approach of NPCA’s education programming, which has gained interest, excitement and participation over the past two decades.
