Global Cement and Concrete Industry Announces Roadmap to Achieve Groundbreaking ‘Net Zero’ CO2 Emissions by 2050
Forty of the world’s leading cement and concrete manufacturers joined forces to accelerate the shift to greener concrete by pledging to cut CO2 emissions by a further 25% by 2030, marking a decisive step in the race to ‘Net Zero’ concrete by 2050. The move by the members of the Global Cement and Concrete Association (GCCA) marks the biggest global commitment by an industry to net zero so far – bringing together companies from the Americas, Africa, Asia, including India and China, and Europe. The GCCA has published a detailed roadmap which sets out the path that the industry will follow to fully decarbonize by 2050.
Announcing the Sonia Saari Memorial Scholarship
CPCI is pleased to announce the Sonia Saari Memorial Scholarship for the 2021-2022 academic school year. Under a new agreement with Mitacs, CPCI is offering two scholarships at $20,000 per year, renewable upon satisfactory approval for a second year, for a total of $40,000 each. The Sonia Saari Memorial Scholarship is available for graduate or post graduate Civil Engineering students in the field of precast or prestressed concrete related research, design or construction. The student must have achieved a bachelor’s or graduate degree from a Canadian accredited program by the summer of 2021.
CPCI is Pleased to Announce the Winners of the First-Ever Wellness Bench Design Competition for Students
CPCI introduced the first-ever Precast Concrete Wellness Bench Competition for Architectural and Engineering students in September 2020 as a pilot project. For the first year, the competition was open to students from Dalhousie University, Carleton University, the University of Manitoba and Guelph University. This year’s theme focused on Wellness and submissions had to carefully highlight the opportunity that precast concrete offers in terms of construction, safety, structural strength, design innovation, social value, maintenance and durability. Ottawa, Ontario - August 6, 2020 – The Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters Manitoba (CME) and the Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) are pleased to announce a recently signed Memorandum of Collaboration to establish a partnership that is mutually beneficial. As part of the partnership, CPCI will receive the status of “Associate Member CME National Training Services” with CME and CME will receive the status of CPCI Affiliate Member. The partnership with CME will align to the goals and priorities of the CPCI Sustainability, Productivity and Safety Committee to establish best practice recommendations for Lean manufacturing and to explore a Lean transformation support model for the precast concrete industry.
CPCI Launches New Learn on Demand Prefab Precast Concrete Educational Video Platform
March 11, 2020 –Ottawa, Ontario – The Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) is thrilled to announce Learn on Demand Prefab Precast Concrete, a new and free platform for educational videos.Learn on Demand Prefab Precast Concrete is a continuing series of interactive educational videos geared towards architects, engineers, real estate developers, academics, students, government officials and construction professionals who want to learn more about precast concrete products and services. Participants must answer questions relating to the video content to advance the video and verify participation. Upon completion the viewer will be sent a certificate of participation to qualify for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and/or Continuing Education Credits (CECs).
Acknowledging a Job Well Done - Andrea Boddy Managing Director, CPCQA Certification Program
CPCI and CCPPA would like to thank Andrea Boddy, Andrea Boddy Consulting, for her dedication, commitment and particularly her leadership as Managing Director of the Canadian Precast Concrete Quality Assurance (CPCQA) Certification Program. In 2017 CPCI and CPCPA announced a new joint venture to establish an independent entity for an enhanced and expanded third-party administered and audited certification program for both prestressed and non-prestressed precast concrete manufacturing facilities across Canada. The CPCQA Certification Program has grown dramatically during Andrea’s tenure as Managing Director as she has overseen the growth of the new plant certification program from its launch to the largest Certification Program in Canada certifying over 80% of all precast concrete production in Canada. The CPCQA Board and CPCQA’s two member associations, CCPPA and CPCI, are pleased with the CPCQA Certification Program’s evolution to date and look forward to seeing how the program will elevate the whole industry in the future. The Board wants to specifically acknowledge Andrea Boddy’s great work, dedication, and professionalism in setting up the organization.

A desire for greater differences in aesthetics has grown as designers look to add visual interest and depth and colour and inlayed traditional material to precast concrete facades. The Precast Concrete Aesthetics Studio was an Interactive Hands-On Demonstration Studio which allowed visitors to create their own form liners, colours and stain precast concrete, as well as add thin inlayed brick to precast concrete panels all to create unlimited design options with amazing architectural colour, textures and depth effects.

Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario October 17, 2019 - Mitacs and the Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) are pleased to announce a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to leverage, expand, and formalize their existing and future partner collaborations. The MOU seeks to advance their common student network activities and incorporate relevant academic research for commercial R&D. Projects in this agreement are divided into three separate streams; Stream 1, National Graduate Student Scholarships; Stream 2, Precast Studio Program; and Stream 3, Collaboration in Research & Development Activities. The result of these efforts will have a direct impact on new career opportunities and will help build a future-ready workforce. Graduates have access to high-value highly skilled jobs through internships and commercial research that will significantly improve their domestic employment potential and contributes to a positive environment that encourages graduates to stay in Canada.

This year, CPCI awarded four $1,500 Scholarships to undergraduate Civil Engineering students in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Ontario and one $30,000 scholarship to a graduate student in Alberta.

he Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) is the technical institute for the precast concrete structures industry. CPCI develops, maintains, and disseminates the Body of Knowledge (BOK) necessary for designing, fabricating, and constructing precast concrete structures. The BOK refers to the collective knowledge of an industry that is relied upon to design and build with a specific material or system. It is from this BOK that building codes, design guides, education programs, certification, and more are derived.

CPCI exhibited at Greenbuild International Conference and Expo last week as part of the North American Precast Concrete Industry, which includes Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute and NPCA - National Precast Prestressed Concrete Institute.Greenbuild is the world’s largest green building exposition. CPCI sponsored an important technical session at the 2016 TAC conference held September 25-28, 2016 in Toronto, ON.
