Project Engineer (CIA)

THE ROLE

This role is directly supporting our Surrey Facility in the area of design, drafting and project management. The successful candidate will perform design calculations and manage project work within the division of Construction & Infrastructure Applications (CIA). This role will also provide support to the division of Engineered Solutions, the Pacific region, or any other part of the company as required. In addition to design, this individual will also supervise all design and drafting staff within the office. This involves: checking design calculations & drawings, mentoring staff, reviewing costs/budgets, leading process improvement initiatives, and ensuring the necessary resources are available to provide quality work (services & products) in a timely and cost effective fashion.

REPORTING

Reports to the Engineering Director or designate

GENERAL INFORMATION

Provide design support to the Surrey location (and the Pacific Region), by applying engineering knowledge to the practical and efficient design of standard/custom elements and structures.
Ensure that designs are correctly incorporated into the productions drawings
Provide design support to the following areas: (1) Projects, (2) Production, (3) Sales, (4) Construction, & (5) Process improvement.
While providing support, one must constantly measure their work against the following criteria: (A) Safety, (B) Quality, (C) Speed, (D) Sustainability & (E) Cost.
Check design notes and drawings as performed by others
Project manage multiple projects as required
Work closely with the Surrey leadership group to expedite the design and drafting of all standard/custom infrastructure products
Supervise design and drafting staff at the Surrey location.
Direct reports may vary from 1-4
Work with the Richmond Engineering staff on other miscellaneous projects as directed.
Occasional travel will be required between the Surrey and Richmond office. Site visits and client meetings will also occur on a weekly basis.
Ensure that all employees are technically strong, and work to continuously improve the effectiveness of the Engineering team. This role will involve the mentoring, coaching and supervision of Drafting and Design staff. This position will also be responsible for establishing new systems, tools, processes and standards related to design.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

P. Eng. In British Columbia (mandatory)
B. Sc. Civil Engineering (mandatory), Masters Degree structural engineer (preferred).
Strong written and verbal communication skills (mandatory)
Computer skills: knowledge of main structural design/analysis software (mandatory)
Structural analysis and engineering fundamentals (mandatory)
Knowledge & experience in concrete design (mandatory), with precast concrete knowledge (preferred)
Welding design experience and knowledge (preferred)
Project management/planning skills (mandatory)
Organized, with neat and accurate notes (mandatory)
Knowledge of contracts and contract laws (preferred)
Registration in other provinces/states (preferred)
Problem analysis, problem solving skills (mandatory)
Dispute and conflict resolution (mandatory)

The ideal candidate will have two to five years experience in a precast concrete plant or manufacturing environment, exceptional leadership skills, combined with a strong technical background. Working knowledge of “lean manufacturing” would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities:
• Proactively coordinate with Field Supervisors, Project Management and Quality Control to ensure conformance to project requirements;
• Conduct internal field audits examining conformance to Company standards and project requirements, including;
o Preconstruction Planning
o Practices & Procedures
o Equipment
o Safety Considerations
o Tolerances
o Quality Control

• Provide appropriate documentation of internal audit findings (report, drawings, pictures)
• Collaborate with erection, quality control, and project management teams to ensure that any non-compliance issues are identified and that appropriate corrective action is implemented to address areas of non-conformance
• Follow up to ensure corrective action has been implemented and is sufficient – initiate adjustments if required

Education Requirements – Knowledge & Skills:
• Completion of college or university level training or equivalent technical training would be considered an asset:
• Experience using MS software programs is required;
• Previous experience in the construction industry and knowledge of standard field practices;
• Previous experience in the concrete industry a definite asset;
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment;
• Good communication skills
